This work consists of a historical survey of textiles and a lexicon of textile terms used in the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. During this period native hand-woven textiles were often discussed as a form of tribute and as a type of merchandise for trade with other ports of the Spanish Empire. However, Chinese and Indian textiles were the most important products on the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade and these were also accessible to Filipinos. Throughout the colonial period, there were several attempts to develop Philippine textiles as export products using these foreign textiles as models. These came to a halt when cheaper products from the power looms of industrialized nations priced them out of the market.
