Abstract
This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of elderly
individuals aged sixty and above who engage in night work in Dumaguete City,
Philippines. Utilizing Colaizzi's method of data analysis, the research aimed to
uncover the physical, emotional, social, and economic challenges faced by older
adults working outside conventional retirement norms. Nine participants were
selected through purposive sampling, comprising vendors and parking attendants,
who shared rich, personal narratives through in-depth interviews and field
observations. Findings revealed nine emergent themes that highlighted enduring
livelihood struggles, physical labor burdens, family-driven motivations, and hidden
emotional pains. Despite experiencing chronic fatigue, illness, and social isolation,
the participants demonstrated remarkable perseverance, spiritual resilience, and
continued commitment to family obligations. They coped with economic precarity
through survival mechanisms such as micro-lending, extended working hours, and
emotional reliance on faith and peer companionship. The study also noted a
concerning absence of formal social support systems and accessible healthcare
tailored to the needs of elderly night workers. This research calls attention to the overlooked contributions of older informal workers and underscores the urgent need for age-inclusive social policies, community-based health services, and targeted economic support. It contributes to a deeper understanding of aging and labor in the Philippine context and serves as a Phenomenological Inquiry into the Lives of Elderly Night Workers foundation for developing humane and sustainable interventions that uphold the dignity of elderly workers.
