520 _aThe study aimed to determine the effects of aromatherapy using lavender essential oil on the nighttime comfort of adult patients admitted to the surgery ward.Several studies have been conducted on the use of aromatherapy in various clinicalsettings, however, few studies validate the use of aromatherapy preoperatively.Theresearcher utilized random placebo-controlled trials and used simple randomsampling technique. Sixty adult patients from private hospitals in Dumaguete Citywere randomly assigned to two groups, the experimental group (n=30)would receivearomatherapy using lavender essential oil with standard nursing care placebo group(n=30)would receive aromatherapy using distilled water with standard nursing care. The researcher utilized Richard-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire, a 5-item 100-mmvisual analogue scale to measure five domains of sleep: sleep latency, sleep efficiency, sleep depth, awakenings, and sleep quality; the final score represents how well theparticipant has slept. The level of nighttime comfort between groups was comparedbefore and after the intervention, and the results of both groups were comparedutilizing dependent sample T-test and Z-test in treating the data. The study found thatthe experimental group showed a higher improvement in their comfort at nightcompared to the placebo group. A difference in the level of nighttime comfortbetween the experimental and placebo groups was observed, with the experimentalgroup exhibiting more favorable outcomes. Aromatherapy using lavender essentialoil was shown to be more effective for the nighttime comfort of the adult patientsadmitted to the surgery ward than standard nursing care alone.
