520 _aHistology from a Clinical Perspective is based on the first edition of Atlas of Histology with Functionaland Clinical Correlations. In this new edition, we recognize fundamental shifts in the educational para-digm for professional students. A modest reduction in hours available for basic science instruction, aclear shift to integrate clinically relevant information within the structure of basic science courses, andthe packaging of basic science and clinical concepts in a way that is most advantageous to the educa-rional goals of the student pursuing a career in medicine, dentistry, or the allied health professions.Wecontinue to emphasize the importance of the correlation between histology and pathology and relevantexamples of clinical cases, and we enhance the linkage of function of histology material to clinical sce-narios.The following improvements have been made in this new edition. First, more clinical correlations have been added. Photographs of some common pathologic condi-tions were chosen to enhance understanding of how normal tissues are modified by a disease process.Reviewers unanimously liked the inclusion of pathologic examples and the format with normal images(photograph and/or drawing) and a pathologic example appearing on the same page.We continuedwith this approach and added new examples. We believe that it is not only a major strength of this proj-ect but also specifically differentiates this book from others. Second,a new feature From Histology to Pathology has been added to this new edition. Histologyand pathology photos are arranged side by side, showing how the basic features of the normal tissueare modified by a pathologic process; this allows easy comparison of the difference between the normaland abnormal tissues and structures and reinforces concepts of basic tissue structure and how it maychange under certain conditions. This insight perfectly integrates histology and pathologic concepts ina very simple way. It provides a bridge for medical students to prepare for their clinical years. Third, clinical vignette questions have been added at the end of each chapter, and their answers canbe found at the end of the book. Most questions in the USMLE are clinical vignette questions.Instruc-tors are encouraged by the Association of American Medical Colleges(AAMC) and Institution Curricu-Ium Committee to write clinical-type questions to prepare students for the national board examination. However, many instructors who teach basic science courses do not have clinical experience and facegreat challenges writing clinical vignettes. We provide clinical vignette questions written by authorshaving clinical experience and reviewed by both basic science educators and clinical faculty members. Fourth,we recognize the value of cell structure and function and have included more details in thecell chapter in the new edition. We also added new content in multiple chapters to make the informa-tion readily available to the users. Fifth, computed tomograph
