520 _aAs the supreme law of the land, the Constitution is by nomeans self-explanatory.Yet it is so important. It is a documentwith which every citizen should be familiar as it directly andconstantly touches every aspect of his everyday life;indeed, tobe respected, obeyed and defended if our nation must grow andsurvive. This is the reason for the requirement that “all educa-tional institutions shall include the study of the Constitutionas part of the curricula.”(Art.XIV,Sec.3[1].) To help fill the need for a book on the subject,particu-larly on the college level, this modest volume, now on its seven-teenth edition, has been written. In an attempt to make it easily understandable, the au-thors avoid legal details and elaborate citations of cases. Theconstitutional provisions are discussed section by section,am-plified and explained in relatively nontechnical language forboth the beginning student and the layman. The comments on the more important provisions, espe-cially the new ones, occupy more space, setting forth whendeemed necessary, the reasons for their adoption as well astheir practical significance. Also, much needed emphasis is giv-en to the provisions on the rights of the citizens as it is impera-tively desirable that they have adequate knowledge of them sothat they may better exercise their rights and discharge theircorresponding obligations to others as responsible members ofa democratic society. A distinctive feature of the book is the use of numerous and extensive footnotes dealing on contemporary issues or concerns- social, economic, political, cultural, and even moral or spiritual-with crucial bearing on the long-term progress and development of our country which is still struggling to be on part with our highly industrialized neighbors in the Southeast
