Heri Dono is recognised as one of Indonesia's foremost artists, having presented his work extensively at major contemporary art exhibitions worldwide. His art has been described as both unsettling and whimsical, populated by a cast of characters occupying a position somewhere “between the serious and the souvenir." Integralto his art making is the influence of traditional shadow puppet theatre (wayangkulit)-its conventions and aesthetics-as well as a sense of play. The latter is evident in the artist's spirited bricolage of art forms and creative expressions, traversing both "high" and "low" culture, the local and the global, in an embrace of hybridity and pluralism. “Play” is also evident in the vein of (dark) humour that runs deep throughout much of Heri Dono's art and in the "madness” of the perspectives that he often presents: the artist in the guise of the court jester or Fool, who, through the art of "an upside-down mind,” “reminds each man of his truth.” This essay offers observations on some of these enduring influences and themes in Heri Dono's work and how these have manifested in the works created during his residency at STPI. -- Page 3.
