"The purpose of the study was to explore the lived experience of the grade six pupils concerning mathematics anxiety. A phenomenological in nature with data collected through personal interviews with nine (9) participants using open-ended questions. A 10th participant was chosen to confirm the data saturation. All responses were recorded in an audio recorder (cellular phone) for transcriptions. Colaizzi's method was used for data analysis. After a thorough analysis of the transcripts, the following themes have emerged to capture the participants' lived experience: personal difficulties with mathematics; crippling fear; felicitous mathematics experience. The study concluded that the pupils' lived experiences of mathematics anxiety were deep, rich and varied. Moreover, the study revealed that the factors causing mathematics anxiety were difficulties encountered in mathematics and the teacher, specifically, the teacher's teaching style and his/her choleric personality which resulted in fear of embarrassment on the part of the pupils. Emergent themes 1 and 2 cover causes of mathematics anxiety." --Abstract
