End-of-life care represents a critical aspect of healthcare where empathy, compassion, and expertise intersect to offer comfort, dignity, and support to dying patients and their families.Previous studies have shown that providing optimal end-of-life care poses significant challenges for nursing professionals, often leading to feelings of anxiety and uncertainty, and resulting in physical, psychological, and emotional exhaustion. This study was conducted to examine the lived experiences of nurses providing end-of-life care, focusing on their emotional responses, coping mechanisms, ethical dilemmas, and personal growth.
Using a qualitative approach, the researchers explored the experiences of nurses in Dumaguete City through detailed interviews and reflective narratives. The findings reveal that nurses develop resilience and professional growth by balancing emotional involvement with professional distance and employing various coping strategies.Effective communication with patients' families and strong support systems are crucial for managing the emotional demands of the role. Despite challenges, such as emotional distress and negative attitudes from patients'families, nurses find deep satisfaction in the gratitude expressed by patients and their families.
This study demonstrates that while nurses encounter significant challenges and responsibilities in providing end-of-life care, their experiences contribute to their professional development and personal growth. The perspectives gained from this research highlights the importance of addressing both the professional and personal aspects of nursing to ensure that nurses are prepared to provide high-quality care while also sustaining their own health and job satisfaction in this demanding field.
