This paper examines the contributions of Justice Ameurfina A. Melencio-Herrera to the development and institutionalization of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in the Philippines. As a former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court and a key figure in judicial reform, Melencio-Herrera played a pivotal role in promoting efficient, accessible, and less adversarial mechanisms for resolving disputes. Her leadership in the Philippine Judicial Academy (PHILJA) significantly advanced ADR education and training for members of the judiciary and legal profession. Through her advocacy, court-annexed mediation and other ADR practices gained wider acceptance, helping to decongest court dockets and improve the delivery of justice. This study highlights how her efforts contributed to embedding ADR within the Philippine legal system and underscores her lasting impact on judicial innovation and reform.
