501 ## - WITH NOTE
With note The idea of putting together this book of images came naturally to us. Ideas are easy to come by but the is no exception.
Family and friends come to mind first. The authors have regular jobs so weekends and holidays vere weekend excursions.Becca Dosch was our constant diving companion and Gutsy's primary spotter.Becca Whipped out dishes learned from home-grown Filipino, Spanish Italian and Mexican recipes.
Anna H. Cu Unjieng served as chief editor for much of the text. Her poems accurately depict our sentiments and views of the ocean - our passion for the sea.
Gutsy's moa, Karen, provided constant encouragement and constructive criticism. Severo Tuason, Gutsy'sdad, not only got his son started on diving and underwater photography, he also showed much understand-ing and support for the time needed by Gutsy to produce this work.
Our rented beach house became a clubhouse where friends joined us on our weekly outings. Rich Underwood Spotted a rare dragonet for Gutsy that still remains unidentified. Many other images were taken without friends spotting the subjects. They made the production of this book all the more enjoyable with their rich and lively conversations at the end of the day's diving activities.
The caretaker of the beach houser Supring, doubled as our boat operator and safety diver.
Benjie Toda and his staff at Studio 58 provided consistent quality film processing and timely delivery.
Lory Tan is our publisher. He is a renowned wildlife photographer and environmentalist. His insights book. Joanne de León is our book designer. Her quiet and unassuming demeanor belied a keen eye and excellent sense of timing in sequencing the images for the book.
And finally, thanks to WUF Philippines for supporting this book and our work as photographers.
To all of you, we wish to express our deepest and continuing gratitude.
520 ## - ABSTRACT, SUMMARY, ETC.
Abstract, Summary, etc. Most of the images presented in this book were taken over a period of a year and a half in an area barely stretching ten square kilometers. While the authors believe that Anilao's wealth of marine life is adequately represented here, one would have to actually visit and spend a considerable amount of time to appreciate the wonders of Anilao.
The incredible variety of nudibranchs, shrimp, crabs and other exotic creatures such as ghost pipefishes, snake eels, flying gurnards and bobbit worms need to be witnessed first hand. All imagin-able variations of crinoids, soft and hard coral, sea fans surrounded by clouds of reef fishes provide an explosion of color and vitality that is breathtaking.
What is truly remarkable is that this celebration of life continues despite serious threats to Anilao Marine environment. This assault on Anilao has been launched by overfishing, dynamite and cyanide uses and unregulated development.
Thirty years ago, Anilao was a genuine underwater wilderness. Schooling fish, sharks and large grouper were common sights on every dive. At one reef, a resident giant grouper the size of a Volkswagen would sometimes investigate divers. Invariably, they would stare mouths agape at the enormous animal whose sheer size and barnacles on his head bore witness to his age. Divers were also treated to sightings of dolphins cavorting on the surface while beneath them, huge schools of jacks, tuna, red snapper and large black surgeonfish moved in protective circular patterns. Just within sight of these schools sharks patrolled in opportunistic anticipation.
The Philippine branch of the World Wildlife Fund along with concerned divers and several resort owners are now trying to stem the tide of destruction to Anilao's marine environment. Anilao has become a favorite weekend destination for Manila's diving community· A two and a half-hour drive transports them from the hustle and pollution of the city to a fishing community whose incomes are now augmented by the numerous dive resorts that line Anilao's shores.
They come to marvel at the extraordinary variety and concentration of marine life in an area no larger than ten square miles. Sightings of the larger marine animals are now rare. Today, divers look to the reef instead of open water in search of something interesting. The older ones still sometimes look hard and longingly into the deep blue in hopeful expectation.
Indeed, it will take more than hope if we are to see Anilao's underwater world restored to its pristine wilderness state. Literally everyone will have to acquire an enlightened awareness of marine conser-vation to make this possible.
Anilao's environmental issues are representative of practically all coastal areas in the Philippines. At the heart of it all are fundamental questions that all of us must answer: Can we coexist with the other creatures on our planet? Can we afford not to?
