The seventh edition of Bae Imrevised to incude recen adnowedge ofthe Immune system.The original grs of his bockfrom the earliest edition,were to prevent curent comcepts in immunology cogently and in sfficient detalthat they would be understood by students of thediscipline, as well as to emphasize cinical apects,including disease pathogenesis and the development ofnovel therapies based on the basic science of immenology.These are the goals that we continue to strive forWith improved understanding of the normal immuneresponse,we believe it is possible to present the fundamental knowledge in a concise way.In addition,therehas been exciting progress in applying basic principles tounderstanding and treating human diseases,a topic thatis of paramount interest for students of medicine andallied health sciences.Foremost among these recentadvances are the development of cancer immuno-therapy and new information about pandemics,herdimmunity,and vaccines,which illustrate how founda-tional science can be translated into clinical practice.<br/>More specifically,we have focused on the followingobjectives,First, we have presented the most importantprinciples governing the function of the immune system by synthesizing key concepts from the vast amountof experimental data that have emerged in the field ofimmunology.We have also prioritized content that isrelevant to human health and disease.We have realizedthat in any concise discussion of complex phenomena,it is inevitable that exceptions and caveats cannot beconsidered indetail, so these have often been omitted.Second,we have focused on immune responses againstinfectious microbes,and most of our discussions of theimmune system are in this context. Third,we havemade liberal use of illustrations to highlight importantprinciples,and we have reduced factual details that maybe found in more comprehensive textbooks. Fourth,we have discussed immunologic diseases from the<br/>You sent<br/>normal immune responses and avoiding details ofselected clinical cases in an appendix to illustrate howthe principles of immunology may be applied to com-mon human diseases. Finally,to make each chapterreadable on its own, we have repeated key ideas indifferent places in the book. We feel such repetition willhelp students grasp the most important concepts.<br/>We hope that students will find this new edition ofBasic Immunology clear, cogent, manageable, andenjoyable to read.We hope the book will convey oursense of excitement about how the field has evolved andhow it continues to grow in relevance to human healthand disease. Finally, although we were spurred to tacklethis project because of our associations with medicalschool courses, we hopethe book will be valued bystudents of allied health and biology as well. We willhave succeeded if the book can answer many of thequestions these students have about the immune systemand,at the same time,encourage them to delve evenmore deeply into immunology.<br/>Several individuals played key roles in the writing ofthis book. Our talented illustrator,David Baker, con-tinues to effectively convert our ideas into pictures thatare informative and aesthetically pleasing. Our devel-opment editor, Rebecca Gruliow, and our editor,Jeremy Bowes,have kept the project organized and ontrack despite pressures of time and logistics.
