Abstract, Summary, etc. | Ecology is a subject which integrates all the different parts of ourbiological and physical worlds. The more we understand about theinteractions between these various aspects of the natural world themore we realise there is to understand, so often the first lesson inscience. It has also become a subject of increasing importance aswe face the huge environmental problems that are constantly in thenews.Academic interest and engagement with environmental issuesremain high. One area of concern is the loss of natural ecosystemsand the species they contain. Conservation of these is a major taskfor those with ecological expertise and understanding and is not justabout how to do it but also, with humilityborn out of hindsight, whatnot to do.
In this book, we focus on the plants. Ecology on land and i freshwater starts with plants, the primary producers and formers of everyliving community. Plants can be seen mainly as providing the habitator template on which other interactions happen, but here they takecentre stage, although, naturally, the book includes animals, fungiand other organisms as they interact directly with plants. Plantshave fascinated me from a young age. After teenage years were spentsearching for as many species as I could find, my thoughts turned tohow plants work and interact. It is why I study plant ecology.Thoseearly years spent in the field have made me very conscious of thecontinuing decline and local disappearance of some of the familiarplants of 50 and more years ago.The threats to the plants of the worldhave not only become increasingly clear, but they are personal too.
There are numerous themes in the study of plant ecology, andI have described what I think are the most important areas of study, especially keeping plant conservation in mind. The book is notintended to be a comprehensive coverage of plant ecology.Thiswould be impossible in a book of this kind, and, anyway, there aremany journals that are delivering new results and new ideas all thetime. I intend this book to act as an introduction to the world andto focus on the main areas of study in plant ecology and to show, inmany places, how little is known and how much scope there is forfuture work.Throughout,I have emphasised the importance of workon ecologyfor plant conservation and for conservation more widely.Inevitably, it will be a personal take. |
