treasure trove with you. Handbook editions traditionally, are edited and revised every 11 years or so.However, this average has been hit by the Sixth Edition where it has been 21 years since the last edition. It is therefore natu-ral for the user to expect a significant overhaul of both structure and content. You will not be disappointed.ThisHandbook was developed from the ground upward based on the needs of a practicing industrial engineer.Theobjective of this handbook, therefore, is to serveas the single point of reference to a student and a practitioner inthe field and anywhere in the world on anything related to industrial and systems engineering.
The first edition of the Industrial Engineering Handbook edited by H.B. Maynard in 1956 included eight sec-tions,74 chapters, and 81 authors. All authors were based in the United States, except for four in London, one inSydney Australia, and one in Canada. The third edition of the handbook, also edited by H.B.Maynard includeda total of 13 sections,87 chapters, and 108 authors. Of the 87 chapters in the third edition,51 chapters,or 59%of the Handbook presented new material. Despite the increase in new material, most authors were still located inthe United States, Australia, and Canada, except for two authors based in Sweden. The most recent fifth edition, published in 2001, and edited by Kjell B. Zandin, included 133 chapters, and 174 authors, repreenting 13 newcountries, and 90% new material. The constant progress of the discipline and the necessity to include new mate-rial underscores the importance of these texts. The current, sixth edition of the handbook, includes a total of 15sections, 13 printed and two accessible digitally. There are a total of 119 chapters by 132 authors. Chapter 14 isdevoted solely to highlighting industrial engineering globally, featuring the state-of-the-discipline in twenty-onecountries. It is personally gratifying to see the globalization of our discipline increase rapidly.
A distinguished team of volunteers from the IISE is also establishing a Body of Knowledge (BoK) that will beavailable on the society's website. To ensure that this handbook aligned with the BoK,I carefully reviewed topicalareas covered there. This review, in conjunction with a review of the typical IE curriculum at academic institu-tions,allowed me to establish the fifteen sections you will find in the current handbook. The cover of the book isalso special. Thehoneycomb logo developed by Krishnan Krishnaiyer is now being used by the BoK team as theirlogo. To validate my alignment, I chose to utilize a similar theme for the cover. The honeycomb theme showsthat the industrial and system engineering body of knowledge is continually growing, inclusive and dynamic.Individual honeycombs can easily be added (or deleted) from the ISE body of knowledge.
This is the first handbook where two sections are available in purely digital format. These sections are particu-larly important to both practitioners and academi |
