500 ## - GENERAL NOTE
General note In 2024, ARCHITECT Magazine, the official print publication of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) since 2011, will continue as a digital-only publication and no longer print physical issues. Instead, the AIA is launching its own new website, digital media hub, and personalized e-newsletter. The effort is set to launch in early 2024.
505 ## - FORMATTED CONTENTS NOTE
Formatted contents note The digital strategy, according to the AIA, is a response to a changing media landscape. The announcement follows the decision by Zonda, which publishes ARCHITECT, to cease printing hard copies at the end of 2023, thereby ending its contract with AIA.

Joe Chappell, senior vice president of marketing and communications for the AIA, told AN, “While we valued our partnership with Zonda, and respect their decision to cease the print edition of ARCHITECT Magazine, we are embracing a transformative era as the publishing and media landscape continues to evolve. Starting in January 2024, AIA will introduce tailored digital experiences using personalization to deliver content unique to each member. These changes enhance AIA membership value while providing access to the highest quality thought leadership for the architecture and design profession.”

In the future, AIA will showcase exclusive content privy to its organizational priorities in a special-issues print publication “provided there are sponsorship dollars to offset the cost.” Once the capital is raised, it may have print issues showcasing topics like the AIA Awards or an AIA Conference on Architecture & Design edition.
505 ## - FORMATTED CONTENTS NOTE
Formatted contents note The new content hub, AIA said, will be available on AIA’s new website as a member benefit. The professional organization further notes that its weekly e-newsletter will leverage personalization algorithms and AI platforms to deliver tailored content to individual members. The diversified media will come in the form of news articles, video clips, case studies, relevant educational opportunities, and best practices.

ARCHITECT will continue as a digital-only offering for readers. In its December 2023 edition, editor-in-chief Paul Makovsky cited in his editor’s note constantly shifting consumer preferences; sustainability factors; rapid technological changes; and rising paper, postage, and printing costs as factors in the decision to discontinue its print magazine.

In his text, Makovsky thanked the AIA for its 12 years of fruitful collaboration. He also said ARCHITECT looks forward to what the future holds as a way to expand the magazine’s influence. “The ability to stay relevant and address issues in real-time is a powerful advantage,” Makovsky wrote, “ensuring that readers receive the most current and accurate information.”
