General note This book represents a thorough and comprehensive collection of lecture notes on Human Resource Management (HRM) and extensive book and journal readings, presented in simple, clear, and easily comprehensible vocabulary.<br/>Writing the book has been a wonderful and exciting journey. It al started with my desire to reasonablyexpress that knowledge of Human Resource Management is not just for thoseworking in Human ResourceDepartment, or aspiring to do so int h e future, but also to students in general business or business administration programs, managerial<br/>staff, and even business owners.<br/>It includes illustrations to show how theories are applied in practice, and case and skill building exercisesthat students can work on.<br/>The book's 12 chapters are organized into five parts with major emphasis on the three<br/>stages of the employment cycle and the corresponding human resource management practices in each stage, namely pre-hiring, hiring, and post-hiring.<br/>Part I presents the Introduction to Human Resource Management. It establishes a<br/>fundamental understanding of what Human Resource Management is. It includes Chapter 1 - containing topics about definition and scope of Human Resource Management,<br/>its historical breakthroughs, and why the study of Human Resource Management<br/>si important. It highlights the differences between Personnel Management, Human<br/>Resource Development, and Human Resource Management. Chapter 2presents the legal aspects of Human Resource Management specifically focusing on Equal Employment<br/>Opportunity Laws ni the Philippines.<br/>Part I explores the three stages of the employment cycle: the pre-hiring, hiring, and post-hiring (Chapter 3). tI introduces to the readers the major Human Resource Management activities ni each stage of the employment cycle. Also included arethe current trends in Human Resource Management, difference between an HR generalist and HR specialist. This chapter also shows the traditional and new specialty areas in HRM.<br/>Part I discusses about the Pre-Hiring Phase, which includes Human Resource Planning (Chapter 4), and Job Analysis (Chapter 5). Chapter 4 includes topics about the relationship between Human Resource Planning (HR) and Strategic Planning, the<br/>step-by-step process of HR and the factors that may affect Human Resource Planning, how a firm may predict its demand for employees through quantitative and qualitative approaches, predict its supply of employees, and how to deal with workforce oversupply and under supply. Chapter 5 discusses the ways to collect job Analysis information, the important components of thejob Analysis, and changes in work schedules.<br/>Part IV explores the Hiring stage. It contains topics about Recruitment comprehensively discussed in Chapter 6, and Employee Selection thoroughly examined in Chapter .7<br/>Part Vpresents the Post-Hiring Stage. It focuses on the essence of the Training and Development component of Human Resource Management (Chapter 8); discusses the methods and procedures in evaluating and managing employee performance (Chapter 9); focuses on managing compensation and benefits as a major consideration in Human Resource Management (Chapter 10); describes ways of promoting employee safety and health (Chapter 11); and introduces legal provisions in separation and termination of employment (Chapter 12).<br/>End-of-chapter materials include a summary of key points which will give the students a chance to look into the chapter concepts and to think critically and respond sensibly to study and discussion questions.<br/>Lastly, the book contains a section on case studies which can be used for classroom and take-home activities. <br/>
