Abstract, Summary, etc. |
The objective of this study is to evaluate differences in environmental parameters betweenthree stream zones for their relation to the abundance of Melanoides tuberculata, the onlyfreshwater snail species recorded during a short survey period between July 24 and August 5,2024. Water current velocity and depth were significantly different between the three zones.Themaximum current velocity in midstream was the highest and that was associated with fewernumbers of M. tuberculata (13). The maximum number of M. tuberculata individuals wasrecorded upstream (site 1) at a water depth. The number of M. tuberculata was 39.Downstream,at site 3 the current velocity was moderate along with the depth. There was a total of 16 individuals recorded.
A Preliminary Study of Freshwater Snail Diversity and Distribution Across Stream Zones, with incidental Macro invertebrate Findings,in Bayawan Nature Reserve,Negros Oriental
Other parameters, which include water temperature,pH,TDS,salinity, and EC, were mostly constant at different sites, with no noticeable variation. In the correlation analysis, all results exceeded the standard significance threshold,p>0.05,so there is no significant correlation between these factors and the presence of M. tuberculata. This implies that M.tuberculata can be well adapted to these stream conditions; therefore, no pollution effects were noted in the distribution of this species.
However, the post hoc analysis was significant for showing that the snail density was highly different at site 1 compared to sites 2 and 3,where the latter two were very similar to eachother. The study shows that reduced water current velocity and larger water depth may be associated with greater numbers of M. tuberculate and that other environmental factors had little or no impact on the abundance of the species over the surveyed stream zones.
Keywords:freshwater snail diversity,distribution,stream zones,environmental parameters,Melanoides tuberculata |
