| Abstract, Summary, etc. | Architecture is more than a random collection of physical buildings. Dr. Kiyoko Yamaguchi's book Poblacion Houses in Cebu: Philippine Urban Architecture in the American Colonial Period vividly demonstrates how true and significant this cliché is. The U.S. built public schools in the población and later at the barrio; the standardized school building and its properly maintained garden meant to represent order, discipline, and the respect for hardwork. Likewise the Municipal Hall and Provincial Capitol were supposed to embody and emanate the spirit of democracy. Dr. Yamaguchi shows that urban architecture during the American Period was ultimately to teach the Filipinos that the Americans were "well-intentioned” and “benevolent” colonizers compared to imperial Spain. |
