| Abstract, Summary, etc. | EVIDENCE: BROOK ANDREW brings into the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences artistic activities and processes that delight in and question the very idea of historical collections and archives. Brook Andrew is an outstanding Australian artist whose multi-layered practice demonstrates intelligent sensitivities in dealing with complex issues of history and our contemporary lived experience. MAAS is proud to present this major immersive art commission that incorporates material from our rich collection and demonstrates the creative, dynamic and energised ways in which objects in our care can be interpreted for our times. Andrew's interdisciplinary practice engages in highly thoughtful ways with sensitive cultural material. His work has consistently questioned perceptions of history and culture from a local and global perspective. Evidence is a significant development in his museum interventions. Our collection spanning so much of human endeavour and Australia's colonial experience provided an abundance of research material and evocative objects, which the artist embraced with great relish and which formed the basis of the commission. -- Foreword |
