Summary: Since 1992, the University of the Philippines-Centerfor Women's Studies has taken an active role, throughresearch and advocacy work, to address the very seriousproblem of gender violence in Philippine society. Underthe Fourth Country Programme for Children of UNICEF,the Center conducted one of the earliest national studiesof family violence through analyses ofthe files anddocuments of judicial, law enforcement, and welfareagencies. The research identified the different forms ofdomestic abuse, the profile of the victims and perpetrators, the aggravating factors or circumstances, and effects ofviolence on the victim-survivors. Because of the great interestin the issue that the study generated after a successfulcountry-wide dissemination of the research report, the UP-CWS continued the research by focusing next on theperspectives of the abusers. The results of these two studies, including the recommendations of the authors, havesubsequently been used to design and pilot-test a modelfor community intervention. At the moment, UP-CWS isactively involved in the establishment of a family healingfacility in one of the residential areas inside the UP Dilimancampus.
