We produced 100 Events that Sbaped the Philippines for two reasons. First, to help the Filipino develop a visual context for the past and appreciate the events sometimes interpreted as a day, other times as a series of actions, or even a full-blown movement that had the greatest impact on the country, shaping it as it is today, as it celebrates the centennial of it becoming a nation. Second, to situate what was happening in the Philippines within the global setting, showing the events as part of a worldwide process that influenced us and received our influence as well.
To identify the events, we prepared a long list which we then sent out with a questionnaire to a group of fifty resource people in the fields of Philippine arts and culture, education, history, politics, economics, science and technology, and religion. We asked for comments, additions as well as deletions. Twenty-one of the fifty resource people responded. When necessary, we conducted follow-up interviews with them regarding their choices. Once we had finalized the list, we started our document and visual research, proceeded to prepare the story of each event, and worked on the design and lay-out of the book. -- Preface
